A new promise lies ahead for Blu-ray discs following Macgo International Limited’s recent signing with One-Blue’s Licensing Program for Blu-ray Disc™ (BD). Macgo signed the BD Software Manufacturer License Agreement as a licensee, thereby acquiring license to use essential patents to the Blu-ray Disc™ standards.

Macgo International Limited is a Hong Kong-based manufacturer of BD player computer software. It prides itself with more than 10 years of experience in video conversion, producing video conversion tools with optimized and enhanced performance through advanced technology.

Last year, Macgo released the Mac Blu-ray Player, the first universal media player software that supports both Mac and Windows. It can play movies, videos, music and photos of any format in all Mac models and supports Blu-ray playback on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Furthermore, is multi-language supported and sports a user-friendly interface. The addition of DTS5.1 guarantees super high quality output, bringing you the best Blu-Ray HD experience.

On the other hand, One-Blue, LLC, established in 2009, is a company that acts as a joint licensing agent to its licensors through the administration of a licensing program for patents that are essential to the implementation of the standards in BD products. It levels the playing field through strong patent enforcement, providing competitive parity for BD providers.

The company operates with an innovative approach to patent pooling, practicing per-batch licensing, pre-netting and product-based royalties. With this, it has helped to lower royalties, transaction costs and streamlined the patent licensing process. In addition, it makes essential patents readily available on non-discriminatory terms and conditions.

The One-Blue program covers hardware and PC software as well as discs. For hardware and PC software, it includes essential patents for Blu-ray Disc™, DVD and CD. For discs, only essential patents for Blu-ray Disc™ standards are included.

The objective of One-Blue is to create a one-stop shop representing Blu-ray Disc™ industry’s leading technology providers. Currently, 93 manufacturers from 15 different countries are licensed by the company. It hopes that licensors from other companies will join and welcomes a merger with other licensing groups for a better outcome for consumers and the industry as a whole.

One-Blue utilizes an open process for evaluating essential patents. All entities holding essential patents to optical formats for Blu-ray Disc™ are invited to join the program as a licensor by submitting these to patent evaluation law firms selected by One-Blue.
