Samsung Electronics has recently announced a new product for the optical storage industry: the SE-406A Blu-ray combo drive. Not only does this drive record CD and DVD discs, but it also plays back Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D discs on the user’s personal computer.
External disc drives are often cumbersome and bulky, but you’ll find none of that with Samsung’s combo drive. Their engineers packed the drive into a super slim enclosure that requires just a single cable to connect to the host computer. This makes the drive ideal for frequent travelers, netbook users, and anyone for who appreciates the efficiency of a good design.
Unlike other external drives, the Samsung SE-406A does not need a separate AC power supply to operate. Samsung engineers designed the drive to be low power consumption from the beginning, which enables it to receive its power over the USB 2.0 connection.
Besides being a very convenient and portable CD/DVD burner for desktops and laptops, the SE-406A adds Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D playback capabilities. The included CyberLink TrueTheater software helps users make sure their computer is optimized for the best multimedia performance.
With this drive and a 3D-capable monitor, users will now be able to enjoy watching high-definition movies in 3D on their home computers. Samsung says the drive is compatible with both Windows 7 and Mac OS.
Expect to see this new slim external Blu-ray combo drive from Samsung on sale for about $150 as early as next month.
